Paris in April 2002 or better : "April in Paris ... "
The Eiffel tower will sparkle again !
As soon as the new painting is dry, the Eiffel tower
will sparkle again !
The painting campaign will end at the beginning of 2003 so the Eiffel
tower will sparkle again by March 2003.
Yet, the lighting techniques and the lights have been chosen : 20 000
lights, 18 kilometers of electric cables.
The new lights, pyramidal this time, are forecasted to last till
2013 ! The tower will be more beautiful than ever !
The new fixation system will avoid to drill holes in the tower. The budget
is around 39 millions of Euro.
In year 2000 the tower had been sparkling 10 minutes each hour between the
sunset to 1am. It is possible that this time it will sparkle one minute
each quarter since the sunset …We can’t wait for the big surprise.
Modern and
contemporary Art
A new Modern art museum opened in Paris a
couple of weeks ago, the Palais de Tokyo next to the Trocadero on
the right bank. I didn’t visit it but my mother
did and she was quite surprised. The new museum looks like a building
site, nothing looks finished inside. There is a big wall in the main room
with tags and behind the wall there are garbage ! It is a moving
contemporary creation center, with lot of events .You can have an idea
with the web site : http://www.palaisdetokyo.com. It is open Tuesday
to Sunday, 12 am to 12pm. ( If you want to have a lunch ,there is a
restaurant, the meal is 7.5 Euro.).
Metro station : Trocadero.
30 years ago, the Beaubourg museum opened. It was a scandal for Parisian people because of all its outside huge pipes with agressive colors: blue for air conditioning, green for fluids (water network), yellow for electrical cables, red for communications (elevators...), security (fire pups...)... The whole building has been designed by the famous architect Mister Piano. A personal advise, go to the top floor, there is a panoramic view on Paris and an excellent and "Chic" restaurant. URL Today, it is one of the main modern art museum in Paris with beautiful collections of Matisse, Picasso , Cezanne et Braque and contemporary paintings Klein, Dubuffet …

A new President for France, coming soon...
We are in the President’s election run and we will
vote this month for a new one for 5 years. All French citizens vote
(universal franchise), there are 2 turns (first turn on April 21th and
second turn on may 5th). All of us are today focused on this event. This
is why if you are coming in Paris next weeks you will certainly cross
demonstrations (one of our national sport !). Of course, before
elections, lot of people try to obtain new advantages and demonstrate in
the streets, (and with a spring sunny weather, this is quite pleasant for
them !). The consequences of all these demonstrations are huge
traffic jams in Paris!
After the president’s election, we will have to vote for the parliament
… people has not finished to demonstrate !
Paris and its Baguettes
The best " Boulanger " (Backer) of Paris has been awarded this week : The boulangerie 158, BOULEVARD BERTHIER (Paris 75017) is the winner of the "Grand Prix de La Baguette de Paris 2002 " .
This is avery important award, because now the winner is the exclusive supplier of the French Republic President. After his victory, the winner has declared that he is very proud to have been selected and by the way he will not increase the price of his baguettes (even with its new monopoly). Thus, you will have the opportunity to taste the President’s baguette.
On my side, closer to the Eiffel tower, I suggest you to
taste the baguettes of " Pain
d'Epis ", 63 av Bosquet 75007 at the
cross of the Bosquet avenue and the "Champ de Mars" street.
Their baguettes are very good. The whole bread preparation and cooking
process is done in the backery and you can see the bakers working using
true traditional methods!
An other good address close to the Eiffel tower is Poujauran, 20 r
Jean Nicot 75007 (in a very small and typical street). This is a tiny pink
backery with a delicious smell inside: all their breads and cakes are
really excellent. Personally I love their apple pies !
The 26th Marathon of Paris
On April 6th (saturday) will take place the now famous "Marathon de Paris". A run of 42 kms in the most known areas of Paris...
Starting on the Champs Elysees and passing thru the Avenue
Hoche, The Louvre, Rivoli street, La Bastille, Vincennes (East of Paris) and
coming back thru the the river Seine's right bank road, teh Tuileries, the
Concorde place, the Torcadero (in front of the Eiffel Tower), and finally
thru the Bois de Boulogne to arrive close to the Arc de Triomphe.
Last year, 27477 runners participated but only 22443 arrived !
24% of participants came from outside France.
If you plan to come to the Marathon de Paris as a spectator or better... as a runner, the best site I have seen on this event is: http://www.parismarathon.com/marathon/2002/us/ . For those of you who plan to particpate in this Marathon of Paris, please let us know, I will be so pleased to come with a banner to support you...
