Ma Petite Lettre de Paris

Mai 2001

In France, in MAY,  we are used to say :
" In April do not take away your coat, in May do what you like ..."

Paris in May :   May is the Mother’s day month but french moms have to wait until the 24 th for their day ! But, if you are an american  mother and in Paris on May 24th, you will have a second mother's day !   (kisses, gifts, greeting cards ...) Great !

On May 1st , a lot of people (whatever their age...) will sell Lilly of the Valley in Paris streets (we call these  flowers "Muguet" in french).
Everybody will buy Lilly to offer to their relationships. We think that the "Muguet" gives happiness and by the way this  is also a good business for flowerists and for a lot of people : May 1st is the only day in the year when you are authorized to sell flowers "Muguet" without a seller permit.

But , May in France is mainly the bank holiday’s month : French people don’t work neither the May 1st ( May day ), nor the May 8 th ( 1945 Victory day ) and nor the May 24 th ( Christ ascent day ). A lot of french people  "font  le pont"  ( the litteral translation  is "  building the bridge " but means : to extend the break)  : if you take a few number of vacation’s day between bank holidays , you have in fact full weeks of holidays  ! (This year, we have 3 possibilities of " ponts ", which looks like viaducs ! ) .

So, the usual question for Parisian people is "  Est-ce que tu fais le pont cette semaine ? " (Do you extend the break  this week ?)

In consequence, during May in PARIS, don’t be surprised by the number of people relaxing in the gardens, shopping or walking in the streets, they " font le pont ! ".

Paris news :
I have heard that the Eiffel Tower will stop to sparkle this year but I do not know when.
It is a pitty but there are some reasons :
  • This illuminution is quite expensive and the lights need to be changed frequently by alpinists ! (do you imagine yourself to be asked to change one of the lamps located just above the third floor of the Eiffel Tower ! ! ! Superb panorama and fresh air ! ! !) . Thus, they stop to change the lights and when the majority of them will be off, they’ll stop.
  • 20 000 lights are very heavy and the tower cannot support this additionnal weight during a too long time. The tower has to take care with her weight !
  • The tower needs to be painted every 7 years and the next painting campaign will begin soon.
  • The Eiffel Tower has known a lot of different illuminations for different events . The spirit of the tower is not to stay static but to change with time and events. Perhaps the future one will be for 2008 Olympic games, if Paris’s canditature is approuved.

However the head light at the top of the tower will continue to rotate above PARIS.

Other news : Recently, I have heard on the radio that the french Economy minister has asked to the new Mayor of Paris to put a new countdown on the tower until January 2002. The goal is to count the days before the EURO. But up to now, there is no EURO countdown working ... I will keep you informed.

Paris by bike :
Just let me introduce you my friend David. David is coming from Houston, Texas, and he has created Bullfrogs Bike Tours : what Bullfrogs Bike Tours  ? This is a variety of visits of PARIS by bike ! Good idea.
You will have fun and pleasure to visit Paris without traffic jam !

The routes are secure and you will enjoy to see the main monuments of PARIS with different points of view. You will be guided by american people loving PARIS.

Paris Eiffel Tower :
Do you know that all Eiffel tower tickets include the access to the lifts machinery ? A very few number of tourists visit the machinery...  perhaps because just after entering in the Tower, you are oriented directly to the lifts to go up and not to the machinery, but after having visited the Tower, ask to a waiter where are the machinery, it is a really fascinating visit. Better than anywhere else you will perceive the Gustave Eiffel genious. Created by Gustave Eiffel himself, these machines have been restored and computerized, but some pieces and processes (ie: manual lubrification of some specific gears) are as they were at the origin. To see !

A bientot.
